I’ve grown up on this stomach remedy. In my house, this drink was used whenever I had a stomach ache, if I was nauseous, or for fluids after throwing up. It is made with simple ingredients that you probably have most of in the pantry. This is a great home remedy for upset stomachs and nausea because it’s a DIY electrolyte drink, but without additives or unknown ingredients.
I didn’t create this recipe; my childhood pediatrician (who also happened to be a friend of my grandparents) gave us this upset stomach remedy. It takes about a minute to make, and always makes me feel better. So we’ve always called it Dr. Ziegler’s upset stomach remedy.
This recipe has been getting a lot of use lately because I’ve been trialing new foods (like in my elimination diet), which more often than not makes my stomach upset. So it’s nice to have this home remedy for upset stomachs on hand.
This is a simple recipe that includes baking soda, orange juice, sugar, salt, and water to help ease your upset stomach!
How to make this remedy
Ingredients

The ingredients are very simple in this upset stomach remedy: orange juice, sugar, salt, baking soda, and water. That’s it! The only thing I sometimes have to go to the store for with this recipe is orange juice (or fresh oranges).
Why these ingredients are added: orange juice is primarily for the flavor, but also for some of the nutrients in it (like Vitamin C). Orange juice is highly acidic, which is not optimal for an upset stomach.
So we add in baking soda to neutralize the acidity. Add sugar to make this go down easier, and especially after throwing up, you need a few calories to keep strength. That’s what sugar adds in.
Salt is important to add in the sodium and chlorine ions to the body, to make sure we’re getting fluids, but not drowning in them. The salt is to maintain an equilibrium in the body.
Water is added to make this a full drink, and to dilute the other ingredients!
Method
Making this baking soda stomach remedy is super easy. You either need a glass measuring cup with ounces measured on the side or a kitchen scale, a tablespoon measuring spoon, and a spoon to stir. That’s it!
If you’re using a kitchen scale, put the glass on the scale, set the measurements to ounces, tare it with the glass. Then DON’T tare again for this recipe. Keep adding on the weights.
Measure out 2 oz of orange juice. To the orange juice, add 2 tbsp sugar (about 1 oz), 1-2 pinches of baking soda (depending on how neutral you want it to be), and 1 pinch of salt. Add water until the mixture reaches 8 ounces.
Tare the glass Add the Orange Juice Add salt, sugar, baking soda Fill with water to 8 oz total
That’s it! This is one of the easiest at home stomach remedies you can make. And it actually works to make you feel better when having an upset stomach!
Feel free to double this recipe and save some for later. Remember that if you’ve been throwing up, only start with a sip or two at a time. Not only is this easy on the stomach, but it should also help ease any digestive problems!
